Inha reef is a semi-sheltered stretch of the Mesoamerican Reef on the Riviera Maya coast, and one of the best places in the area to snorkel with sea turtles, stingrays and tropical fish. The easiest way to get there is on your own boat: the private 4 hour Inha Snorkel Tour leaves Puerto Aventuras Marina and starts at $1,300 for the whole yacht, with an open bar, ceviche and snorkel gear included.
This guide covers what Inha reef is like, what you'll see in the water, how the private snorkel tour works, 2026 prices for every yacht and catamaran, and a few tips to get the most out of your swim.
Quick answer: Inha (also written In-Ha) is a calm, clear reef area about an hour's relaxed cruise from Puerto Aventuras Marina. It's part of the second largest barrier reef system in the world, and turtles and stingrays are regular visitors. The private Inha Snorkel Tour gives you plenty of time in the water with just your group and your crew.
What is Inha reef like?
Inha sits along the Riviera Maya coastline, where the Mesoamerican Reef runs just offshore. This part of the reef is semi-sheltered, so the water is usually calmer than the open sea and very clear. On a sunny day it glows every shade of turquoise, and you can see the sandy bottom, coral heads and fish from the swim platform before you even get in.
The Mesoamerican Reef, sometimes called the Great Mayan Reef, stretches from the top of the Yucatán Peninsula down past Belize to Honduras. It's the second largest barrier reef system in the world, after Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Snorkeling Inha means you get to tell everyone back home that you swam on it.
Calm and clear
A semi-sheltered reef area with clear water and good visibility on calm days.
Turtles and stingrays
Sea turtles and stingrays are regular visitors, along with schools of colorful fish.
Private and uncrowded
You arrive on your own boat, so it's just your group in the water with your crew.
What you'll see snorkeling at Inha
- Sea turtles. Turtles are the star of the show. They graze on the seagrass and glide over the reef, often coming up for air right beside you.
- Stingrays. Look down at the sandy patches between the coral and you'll often spot a ray resting on the bottom or gliding past.
- Tropical fish. Sergeant majors, parrotfish, blue tang and plenty more crowd around the coral heads.
- Coral and reef life. Sea fans, brain coral and all the small creatures that live in the reef.
Every day on the ocean is a little different, and these are wild animals, so sightings are never guaranteed. But turtles and rays are seen often here, which is exactly why Inha is one of the most popular snorkel spots on this coast.
How the private Inha Snorkel Tour works
The 4 hour Inha Snorkel Tour leaves from Puerto Aventuras Marina and is 100% private. Here's how the day goes:
- Welcome aboard. Meet your captain and crew over a welcome drink, then cruise out of the marina.
- Cruise to Inha. The run up the coast takes about an hour at a relaxed pace. The crew troll fishes along the way, and anything you catch can be prepared fresh on board.
- Snorkel and swim. Drop anchor, grab your mask and fins, and spend plenty of time in the water with the turtles, rays and fish. Hop in and out as often as you like.
- Relax on board. Not everyone has to swim. Sunbathe on deck, enjoy a cocktail and take in the view. It's your private tour, so the pace is up to you.
- Lunch and drinks. When you're back aboard, the crew serves fresh guacamole and their signature shrimp and fish ceviche, with the open bar running the whole time.
- Cruise back slowly. Enjoy the music and the coastline on the way back to the marina.
Included: welcome drink, full open bar, freshly made guacamole and chips, shrimp and fish ceviche, snorkel equipment, towels, fishing gear and a high-end Bluetooth sound system. The open bar covers national beers, Smirnoff vodka, Bacardi rum, Johnnie Walker Red Label, José Cuervo tequila, soft drinks, juices and water. Don't eat seafood? Just ask, and the crew will arrange something else.

Snorkel tips for Inha reef
- Give turtles space. Watch them from a respectful distance and never touch, chase or feed them. They'll often stay close if you stay calm.
- Don't stand on the coral. It's alive and fragile. Float, or rest on the sand or back on the boat.
- Use reef-safe sunscreen, and put it on well before you swim. A rash guard is even better.
- Go earlier if you can. Calm mornings usually give the clearest water, though conditions always depend on the weather that day.
- Bring an underwater camera or a phone in a waterproof case for turtle photos.
- Add transport if you need it. Private roundtrip transport in an air-conditioned van starts at $90 for up to 17 guests, and VIP transport in a luxury SUV starts at $300.
- Bring cash for the dock fee and a tip for the crew.
